"Passion" DVD special deal

August 31, 2004

Today is the release date of the DVD version of Mel Gibson’s “Passion of the Christ”. You may find it difficult to get a copy, so if you don’t want to run into “Hell-Mart” (my view of Wal-Mart) then go to Amazon.com where you can purchase it for less than many other places.

CINO anyone?

August 31, 2004

Recent Democratic writers and commentators have invented a term for people who are Republican in their voting pattern but Democrat in their view toward public policy. They call them RINOs (Republicans In Name Only). This is a recognition that someone may vote one way while their inner heart may lean another.

My greater concern these days is with CINOs (Christians In Name Only), those who in their hearts want the things of this world more than the things of God. Test your own heart: do you begrudgingly do things the way God wants, instead of doing them with joy; do you wonder whether the world is having more fun than you and wish you were them? These may be symptoms of CINO disease.

A Note From Paraguay

August 31, 2004

Bob and Brenda Boston, missionaries in Paraguay, wrote an email this week, updating us on their ministry in these areas:

Extending Christs love begins with those that are closest to us. Last February in VBS while I was teaching on the importance of reaching our family for Christ, a six year old raised her hand and said, “my grandma says she would rather go to hell than ever step foot in this church”. We took a moment to talk to the little girl and then we prayed for her grandma. . . and we have been praying for grandma ever since. A week ago, grandma came to church. Grandma was touched by the love the church showed to her family the week that her mother died and another granddaughter was born. In the midst of tragedy and life changing events, the family of Christ was there to support her family in so many practical ways, that it broke through the preconceived ideas and unfounded hatred.

Preparing for 40 Days of Purpose. In addition to attending church, grandma has committed to participating with the San Lorenzo church (and 10 other churches in the greater AsunciĆ³n area) in the campaign “40 Days of Purpose”. The campaign begins September 5 and the San Lorenzo church has 27 homes that will be opening their doors to share the program with family, neighbors and co-workers. Pray for open hearts to the message of what God wants from each one of us as we read “The Purpose Driven Life” together. Three CMA churches in the country are participating together in this campaign.

The months of July and August brought teams from Trinity Alliance, Redding CA, and Paradise Alliance as well as a team of youth from North Carolina. The teams gave the San Lorenzo church a boost as they helped to construct the CE building in the back of the church and add a roof. Paradise CMA built a home for the pastor and his new wife in San Antonio so they can live close to the people. The teams participated in VBS, special evangelistic events, ladies teams, youth events and special speaking. We are thankful for the practical help and for the encouragement that each team brings us personally.

What Did I Just Say?

August 29, 2004

The Bible says, “Out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks”. What this means is that sometimes we say things that surprise us, maybe even shock us. At times we express something with anger, sadness or fear that seems more than we intended to say. Often, this is because our hearts wanted to get out something that our brains didn’t want to acknowledge.

But, just as these slips can be embarrassing, they can also be enlightening. In Romans 10, Paul is speaking about how we can live a life of faith and righteousness. He quotes from Deuteronomy 30 where it speaks about how the Law of God is not hard to fathom. In fact, he says, “The Word is near you, it is in your mouth and in your heart”. Notice that he says, “It is in your mouth…”. Since the Spirit of God lives inside us as believers in Jesus, we have the author of the Bible and the Law of God living there. There are times we will say things that express our faith, our deepest trust and love, even though we had not intended the fullest meaning of what we said. We can literally “overflow with truth”. Those moments it is wise to write down what comes out of your mouth. There are times when I have been preaching and what I had written is not what came out of my mouth. But each word must have been intentionally placed there by God, because someone will come up and ask me why I said exactly what I said. They then have said it changed their life.

Isn’t that also why we read, “do not worry what you will say in that hour, for the Spirit of God will put the words in your mouth.”

When the Politics are too Serious…

August 28, 2004

When you can’t stand another sound byte or a blatant attempt to secure your favor by someone you already decided to never listen to, aren’t you glad there are a few commentators out there that don’t take it too seriously. For a refreshing break, try Scrappleface. Readers beware: These stories are parodies, they are not true. Do not send them to everyone on your remail list as if they were. They will laugh at you and send your name in infamy to all their remailers.

Not the Way to Handle Marital Problems

August 26, 2004

According to the August 6 edition of the Boston Globe, Some people out for morning rush hour on Aug. 5 in the Dorchester section of Boston were treated to a demolition derby on New England Avenue, after Yvesnane Gethers, 27, in a white limousine, chased her husband, Wayne Gethers, in another white limo, at speeds up to 50 mph and rammed him at least five times, causing extensive damage to both cars. The couple just happen to own white limos as their vehicles of choice, and Mrs. Gethers happened to discover her husband in his, having an early morning drink with a female friend.

May we as the pastoral staff remind you that freeways are for driving and the prayer closet is for solving problems.

A Chance to Pray

August 26, 2004

Are you aware of this recent ruling concerning partial-birth abortion laws? Pray that this heinous procedure will be outlawed and the wishes of the vast majority of thinking Americans will be adhered to by our courts.
