Hurricane Charley Update

August 19, 2004

Hurricane Charley could not shake the faith of Alliance believers in Florida, who weathered the storm in prayer. An outpouring of help has come to the victims in Port Charlotte, Punta Gorda, and the surrounding area. But the infrastructure in these communities will take months to restore completely.

The Southeastern District Office in Orlando is out of commission. The Conley area of Orlando was hit hard. There still is no power or traffic lights, making it difficult to navigate through town.

The Southeastern District has set up three staging areas where people can go to offer their help:

Contact people: Dennis and Pam Bower, 941-629-5200. The Bowers are missionaries to Russia who are home on medical leave.

Sunnybrook Church in Englewood: Dr. Jim Davis, 941-475-0342 Sarasota Church: Doug Vance, 941-379-1929

Christ Community in Fort Myers: David Lane, 239-939-5656

The number one need right now is generators. Power has not been restored in most of Port Charlotte and Punta Gorda.

Scott Borden, pastor of First Alliance Church in Port Charlotte, reports that there are 20 to 25 families from his church that need help, and his congregation also is reaching out to the greater community.

Pray for District Superintendent Mark O’Farrell as he oversees the cleanup in Orlando and travels to Alliance churches in Fort Myers, Punta Gorda, and Port Charlotte. Pray for the Bowers as they work to meet the needs of all who call. Pray for the pastors and their staff at the Alliance churches that were destroyed, that God will give them strength and provide for all their needs.
